Democratic Senator Joe Manchin said he would not vote to confirm President Biden’s election as director of the bureau of administration and budget, Neera Tanden, which threatens and potentially fuels her confirmation because of the 50:50 split in the Senate a Republican would have to support Tanden to make up for Manchin’s “no” vote, which seems unlikely

Manchin cited Tanden’s story of partisan comments and tweets as a cause for concern and explained his decision in a written statement:

“I have carefully examined Neera Tanden’s public statements and tweets, addressed personally to my colleagues on both sides of the aisle, from Senator Sanders to Senator McConnell and others, I believe that their openly partisan statements create a toxic and harmful effect Will influence the vital working relationship between members of Congress and the next director of the Office of Administration and Budget. For this reason I cannot support your nomination As I said earlier, we must take meaningful steps to end the political division and dysfunction, which permeates our politics In a time of severe crisis, it is more important than ever to embark on a new bipartisan course that will help meet the many serious challenges our nation faces “

In the past, Tanden has referred to Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell as “Voldemort” and fought online against Senator Bernie Sanders and his supporters. Sanders’ vote on Tanden was also monitored as a potential “no” during their confirmation hearing the Vermont Senator asked Tanden some of the key questions about the social media comment she directed to his supporters

“There have been vicious attacks against progressives, people I have worked with personally,” he said, “Can you reflect a little on some of your decisions and some of the personal statements you have made over the past few years?”

Tanden apologized and told the senators at the hearing that she deleted some of her tweets and promised that if confirmed, she would take a “radically” different approach

Despite Manchin’s opposition, Mr. Biden said he would not pull the nomination

“Neera Tanden is an accomplished policy expert who would make an excellent budget director and we look forward to the committees voting next week and continuing to work towards their endorsement through working with both parties,” a press statement said White House Secretary Jen Psaki
