A New Jersey woman was fired from Starbucks for refusing to wear a “Pride” t-shirt based on her religious beliefs, a lawsuit alleged
Betsy Fresse, a Newark Christian who has worked as a Starbucks barista since December 2015, alleged in a lawsuit filed last week that she was “reassured” by managers that her beliefs were none after switching to one Problem would be business in Glen Ridge early last year
But months later, during a meeting in a management office in June 2019, Fresse noticed a box of Starbucks’ Pride shirts on a desk and then asked if she should wear one, which would be “forced speech” there she believes marriage is defined in the Bible as “only one man and one woman,” says the lawsuit
“Ms. Fresse is the personal religious conviction that all people need Jesus”, it continues “Ms. Fresse believes that every Christian is called to love and treat everyone with respect and compassion, regardless of his religious or other Conviction ”
Fresse’s manager told her she didn’t have to wear the shirt to work – just for a district manager to tell her in late August that her employment had been terminated under lawsuit filed on November 19 in the New Jersey District Court
A notice of the split from Starbucks, quoted in the file, said Fresse was fired for violating the company’s “core values” and that her colleagues “needed Jesus” when she received the t-shirt. p>
“We enforce these values when we stand up for inclusion and diversity and greet people with different backgrounds and perspectives and learn from them,” says the notice
Fresse’s unlawful discrimination lawsuit seeks repayment, punitive damages, and payment of legal fees. A permanent injunction is also sought that will prevent Starbucks from “failing to live up to the righteous religious beliefs of employees”
“We are very much aware of the claims made by Ms. Geek that are of no merit and we are fully prepared to take our case to court,” a Starbucks spokesman told The Post. “Specifically for our dress code, aside of our green apron, no part of our dress code requires partners to wear approved items that they have not personally selected ”
