The Walking Dead now had a second midseason premiere, I guess you could call it Today marks the soft start of The Walking Dead, Season 10C, six bonus episodes that filmed in pandemic conditions filling in some past blanks for the show and amusing fans until season 11 comes down the road

You can watch the first of these episodes, 10×17, Home Sweet Home, on AMC right now, with the episode actually airing on AMC a week from today. But now that it’s out, I wanted to get into some of the details that I couldn’t discuss it in my preview about a week ago

While this episode isn’t a throwback to Maggie’s absence, we learn where she was and why she’s back now, in short, she eventually split up with Georgie and started a new community, but they were attacked by a mysterious new group called the Reapers where many were slaughtered and only a few surviving members fled, Maggie returned to her old, original ward, Rick’s group, leaving Herschel and a few others in a hut in the woods when she made contact

Maggie never knew why this group attacked her, but here’s what we know about her based only on that unique encounter

They are so dangerous that even a single nameless member of their group burned down their warehouse, killed several members of Maggie’s team, and only had to give in when surrounded by Maggie, Daryl, and their entire group

The Reapers seem to be some sort of paramilitary / hunter type, the Reaper we see here is practically wearing a ghillie suit when we first meet him He hides in the forest, flicking his targets out of cover and setting up traps to catch others who would try to reach him

When his face is revealed he’s just a gray dude with a full blown military haircut. The implication by all of this is that the Reapers may be ex-military or some kind of special forces group that got murderous in the apocalypse

And they’re so hardcore that despite the many arrows, the guy doesn’t say a questioning word and ultimately decides to blow himself up with a grenade instead of being captured

Well, the Reapers are not a villain group from the comics, so here we are in an unfamiliar territory from “Terminus / Wolves” The way he is dressed and works implies that this Reaper is not part of the Commonwealth with his white-clad military police still tied to the CRM group that took Rick with him and a fixture in The Walking Dead: World Beyond. They may be similarly brutal, but this guy is a different kind of beast

It is unclear how long this Reaper threat is supposed to last.It might just be for this mini-arch, but I suspect it will extend into next season, for example we know that there is at least one Daryl flashback Episode unrelated to the Reapers There’s a Commonwealth episode later after Eugene’s group re-captured what probably won’t be Reapers related so I wonder if at least for some of the expanded ones In season 11, the Reapers will pose the threat at home as Eugene, Kimiko, and the others try to figure out what’s going on with the Commonwealth overseas. The Walking Dead has to radically adapt from the comics, as there aren’t many characters left for this arc there, including pretty much all the key players like Rick, Michonne, Carl, and Dwight. At least Maggie is back, I suppose

Anyway, I found the Reaper terrifying and definitely curious to know more about them. The Walking Dead is always trying to outdo itself with its new villains, and I would say they have a pretty solid start here have
